Nanao-chan wasn't a fighter type. He was Vice-Captain because he could handle Kyorakus fond of women. Other than that, Yamamoto must be pretty much stronger than anyone else. I think he is even in power with Aizen too. If he wouldn't Aizen could simply walk in the base, take some bodies for experiment, and pick the books he like from the secret library.
